Re Welting

Re Welting

The welt is the leather strip that surrounds the leather upper and holds the Goodyear welted footwear together. Welts usually come in a 360 stitch (such as Redwing Moc-Toes) or a 270 stitch (such as a formal dress shoe or Redwing Iron Ranger)

Sewn into the leather upper, the mid-sole, through sole and welt are then stitched together.

This results in a strong and water resistant construction, with the ability to be resoled without affecting the uppers.

After several resoles or a bad repair, the welt can eventually become damaged and require replacement.

We do this in the traditional manner - by hand, with high grade leather welting and utilising the saddle stitch.
This is regarded as the strongest of stitch types, superior to the lock stitch done by factory machine welting.

If you are unsure wether your shoes or boots need this repair or if you have any questions you would like answered about this process please contact us.
